Focus Foundation Schools

The academic activities of the School of the Baroque and the School of Technology – later called the School of Energy and Climate Change – were launched in academic year 2003-2004 after being created by the Focus Foundation. Each of these schools is held in the autumn and spring of each year at Seville’s Hospital de los Venerables, the Foundation’s headquarters.

The primary objective of the schools is to offer outstanding, university-quality courses on a timely topic of interest related to the culture of the Baroque and to energy and its future options. These courses are clearly international in nature, as reflected each year in the painstaking choice of the professors and directors, who are recruited from the most prestigious universities, institutes, museums and research centres both in Spain and abroad.

In line with the Foundation’s original principles, the value of culture, technology and science as factors of progress in a modern society have set the course of the Focus Foundation. Ever since it was created in 1982, its activities have been oriented at promoting culture, scientific knowledge and social work. And the School of the Baroque and the School of Energy and Climate Change contribute to this founding purpose, as do the other activities programmed by the Foundation.

The School of the Baroque examines a topic which is uniquely resonant in not only Spanish and Sevillian culture but also in the culture of Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world thanks to the projection of the first globalisation, which occurred through knowledge in the 18th century. It pays particular attention to the aspects related to the cultural heritage and social patronage of the Baroque, and one of its exponents is the Centro de Investigación Diego Velázquez, created as an integral part of the Foundation.

With the School of Energy and Climate Change, the Foundation reveals its steadfast mission to harness academia and research to contribute to the dialogue needed to achieve a sustainable future in which the energy model and climate change play a decisive role. Both of them are crucial challenges in the present and coming years, where new models are taking shape sustained on non-polluting renewable energies with a guaranteed supply. And to contribute to this advance based on an open dialogue between society and the scientific community, a new era has gotten underway after the Foundation’s creation of the Forum on the Energy Transition and Climate Change, which from now on will be part of the School of Energy Transition and Climate Change.
