Objectives

As the Courts of the Modern Age were established in specific cities, as opposed to the travelling Courts of the Middle Ages, these cities became the capitals of their respective kingdoms.

But the idea of capital surpasses the merely administrative or bureaucratic meanings: the new capitals/Courts embodied complex systems of representation – of power relations, political objectives, shifting alliances, etc. – while they also became the sites of a unique culture, the Culture of the Court, which had been theorised by Castiglione in the early 16th century but which are now experiencing a veritable hypertrophy.

The purpose of the course entitled “European Capitals: The Moment of the Baroque” is to trace this rich disciplinary web that encompasses everything from the urbanistic to the symbolic, from the political to the economic, by analysing some of the leading European capitals.
