Objectives

The book, books. No object created by humanity encompasses such conflicting feelings. From the amorous passion of the bibliophile to the furious wrath of the biblioclast, there is nothing more valuable and dangerous than a book, hence the formation and destruction of libraries, the special spaces for books, as ancient a phenomenon as the very history of written culture. In a dialogue between past and present, the purpose of this course is to invite the most prestigious experts from both Spain and abroad to address the process of the formation of a bibliographic heritage, one of the richest heritages in the world, which includes Seville’s Biblioteca Colombina, Paris’ Bibliothèque Mazarines, the British Library, the USA’s Library of Congress, the Vatican Library and the Hispanic Society of America, whose unique feature is the fact that they conserve important Spanish collections. We will also try to examine the reasons and wrongful notions that have led people and institutions to despoil, censure, prohibit and destroy books and libraries; in short, to annihilate what is one of the most important hallmarks of peoples and spheres of individual freedom.
