The origins of the Fundación Fondo de Cultura de Sevilla (Focus) has to be related to the cultural activity that the company Abengoa undertook in 1972 with the publication of the first book - Temas Sevillanos (Seville Themes). This was followed by Iconografía de Sevilla (Iconography of Seville), nowadays very rare and much in demand. At the same time as these publications, a collection of documents, books and engravings to do with the Kingdom of Seville or by authors from Seville, was being put together.

This cultural activity inspired and favoured by Abengoa, made its leaders aware that it would be advantageous to go beyond its essential technological functions with an activity that would be of benefit to society as a whole. It was for these reasons that Fundación Fondo de Cultura de Sevilla (FOCUS) was established in 1982.

The Foundation moved its premises in 1991 to Hospital de Los Venerables (originally a home for venerable priests) after the Fraternity and Archbishopric of Seville granted the Focus Foundation use of the building for a limited period. Focus rehabilitated the old 17th c. building and prepared it for its new functions and, at the same time, had an exceptional organ built for the church. Activities have been increasing every since, complying faithfully with the Foundation's objectives in promoting culture in the different fields of art and science, while undertaking tasks of conservation and development of Seville's historical and cultural heritage and making it known throughout Latin America.
