Universal Children’s Day takes place each year on November 20. This day of observance dates back to 1954, when it was proclaimed by the United Nations with the aim of raising people’s awareness of the importance of watching over the rights of the world’s children.

According to current data1, more than 17,000 children under the age of five die each day from malnutrition and a lack of medical resources; one out of every three girls from 15 to 19 years of age around the world have suffered gender violence; and 32 % of the children in western Africa still do not have access to elementary education.

This is just a glimpse of the reality that underscores the importance of celebrating Universal Children’s Day, contributing to the acknowledgment of children, and driving forward initiatives aimed at protecting their rights.

The PE&C (People, Education and Communities: Committed to Development) program undertook to engage youngsters in shared celebration of this day by organizing a variety of entertaining activities for them to enjoy together with family and friends. In Argentina, children and teens from low-income families and communities had the opportunity to enjoy inflatable castles and mobile movie showings. In turn, the girls at the Santa Rita de Cassia Orphanage in Brazil participated in workshops, dances and games along with family members and company employees; meanwhile, at the program headquarters in Aracaju, a “strolling workshop” was set up at the Aruanda Beach for people to enjoy observing local nature and animals. And in Chile, migrant kids lived an intercultural meeting at an educational hobby farm with assistance from volunteers.

Through these efforts, PE&C once again highlights the importance of protecting those who are most vulnerable, especially children, and the need to provide them, through education, with opportunities for the future.
