Baroque Library

The Library of the Baroque is the outcome of more than three decades of initiatives undertaken by the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, all of which share the Baroque in its different facets - artistic, cultural, literary, historical, etc.- as their common thread..

Created in 1982, the Foundation's earliest activities were aimed at assembling a library collection and a room of engravings showing urban views of Seville, as well as at organising unique exhibitions on Baroque painting..

These initiatives were later joined by a wide repertoire of projects, thanks to which the library and art collection have only kept growing over time, which has accentuated the library's mission of specialising in the Baroque. The Baroque music concerts, which feature the prize organ in the Hospital de los Venerables, along with the School of the Baroque and publications have been just some of the sources that have enriched this collection, making the library a benchmark at the service of the study of and research into the Baroque as a whole with the founding of the Centro Velázquez. More recently, after adding the Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez Legacy, the Library of the Baroque collection has been considerably enhanced so that it now includes over 37,000 volumes.

Since 2011 the library has joined the collective catalogue of the Network (Network of Specialised Documentation Centres and Libraries of Andalusia), which depends on the Ministry of Culture of the Regional Government of Andalusia.

Today the library, which is organised into several topographically different collections, is housed in the former Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes, the headquarters of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation in Seville.

Faithful to its mission of foresting knowledge and disseminating culture in its multiple expressions, the Foundation lends out pieces from its collections to outstanding temporary exhibitions.

Fondo General
General Collection

This collection is the organisational core around which all the bibliographic collections and purchases made by the Focus are registered and organised. It is what determines the general bibliographic record and the standarised inclusion of the different collections which are expanding the library over time in a database.

Fondo de Tema Sevillano
Seville - Themed - Collection

This is the core collection that was the seed of the library. The Seville- Themed Collection brings together around 6,000 volumes. With a select yet small set of old books, the majority of its volumes are editions from the 19th, 20th and 21th centuries.

Biblioteca Barroco del Centro Velázquez
Baroque Library of the Centro Velázquez

Because of its theme, this library was envisioned as a reference in the study of the Baroque in its most diverse facets. Because of its content, which includes books, journals, catalogues, bibliographic materials in a variety of languages, etc., it is also a highly specialised library meant for research.

Legado Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez
Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez Legacy

The Focus Foundation was the recipient of the legacy of the library, photograph collection and persona archive of Alfonso Emilio Pérez Sánchez, along with his collection of works of art. This legacy was made possible thanks to the donation of his legal heirs, Francisco Rocha Nicolás and Benito Navarrete Prieto.

Gabinete de Estampas
Room of Engravings

The Focus-Abengoa Foundation has an important collection of engravings which includes a total of 300 works from the 16th to 20th centuries, with which it has formed a Room of Engravings.

Fondo Antiguo y Manuscritos
Old Books and Manuscripts Collection

The Old Books and Manuscript Collection brings together works dating from prior to 1830. It includes around 400 printed books from the 14th to 19th centuries (up to 1830), many of them related to the history and art of Seville.
