Bartolomeo Cavarozzi

Born in Viterbo around 1590, he received his training in the late Mannerist style. However, while lodging as a "relative" with the noble Crescenzi family in Rome, who were patrons of the "new" art, he developed his own personal interpretation of Caravaggio's style, informed by his knowledge of the artists of Bologna and the models of Raphael, but featuring stark contrasts of light.

He came to Spain in 1617 as part of the entourage of his patron Juan Bautista Crescenzi – an influential artistic restorer in court circles – and returned with him to Rome in 1619, when his protector went in search of bronze craftsmen to work on the monastery of El Escorial. He remained there until his death in 1625.
