Agustín Galán García

After the first members of the Society of Jesus arrived in America in 1566, a change of their apostolic work in the New World became necessary. This situation led to the foundation of the Oficio de Indias, an institution in charge of training and sending Jesuit preachers to the American continent from Seville. In this book published by our Foundation, Agustín Galán García reviews the creation and history of the entity, focusing on aspects such as its missionary and economic structure or the financing of expeditions. The study also rescues from oblivion the names of hundreds of Jesuits who embarked on their preaching work since the mid-sixteenth century until the expulsion of the religious community in 1767.
